SMC has engineered a new suite of sprockets that use ball bearings exclusively. Ball bearings are more precise, improving durability, cost, and acceleration.

Excessive wear between the clutch disc tangs and the drum slots has been a problem since 1995 when drums were machined from aluminum instead of stamped from steel.

Whether the drum had two, three, eight, or 12 slots and tangs did not affect the magnitude or rate of wear. So, the problem was not contact stress. Our research concluded that the problem was caused by insufficient bearing stiffness. The ubiquitous needle roller bearing had generous radial and axial clearances that caused abrasion.

The solution is the superior stiffness of ball bearings. Abrasion is minimized. Drums and discs last longer, and the energy lost in abusing the clutch is instead available for acceleration.
